Small classes of 4 to 8 students. We specialize in Raku Sculpture, Figures, Animals, and Tile, we also produce thrown work, clay musical instruments, high-fired tableware, and have many other ceramic/artistic interests, such as Arawak style pit-firing, life-drawing classes… silk and fabric painting, watercolor - see site links.

THROWING ON THE WHEEL-INDIVIDUAL LESSONS NOW AVAILABLE FEBRUARY TO MAY 2009

CLASSES IN 2007-8 INCLUDED:

BEGINNER’S / THROWING ON THE WHEEL / HAND FORMING AND SLABWORK / TILE / BAKE-WARE / SCULPTING A LIFESIZE HEAD and LIFEDRAWING… with students from 5 yrs to 80 yrs old. Some French and Spanish spoken.

NEW CLASS- 4 APRIL FOR 5 SATURDAYS 10-12.30

INTERMEDIATE CLAY SCULPTURE $225, CLAY INCLUDED.

June 2nd, 2008 New to Clay Class

Starting - Summer 2009. Saturdays 10-12.30 OR weekdays upon request for 3 or more people. Book by telephone: (340) 773-2022

Five 150 minute sessions, $225 for series.  
(Firing fees apply for work produced from week 3, assessed at 4c/ cubic inch)

Week 1: Introduction to clay properties, hydration, plasticity, texture etc. Wedging clay, use of grog etc. Making a slip cup. Making a pinch pot creature, adding appendages, score and slip techniques, making a clay whistle, texturing and smoothing techniques. 3lb clay provided.

Week 2: Coil-building a small vessel, decorating with coil handles, coil animals, patterns rolled in, openwork, 5lb clay provided.

Week 3: Handrolling slabs, throwing slabs, building with patterned pieces, pre-texturing with plants, textiles, found objects, to produce a planter, utensil or similar. Glazing of previous weeks’ work. 5lb clay provided.

Week 4: Starting project to complete by week 5 - eg. house sign/ tray with Asian style cups, plates etc./lighting sconce/ larger animal sculpture. 10 - 15lb clay provided. Glazing work from week 3.

Week 5: Complete project, complete glazing of other work.demonstration of Raku firing. Firing fees will be assessed by size of work at 4c / cubic inch.

June 2nd, 2008 Ceramic Tile / Slabwork Class

Five 180 minute sessions, $250 for series OR $45 per session.

(Firing fees apply for work produced from week 3, assessed at 4c/ cubic inch). Extra time on projects can be allotted during any Studio Worktime session between classes, at $10 per session for class members.

Week 1: Introduction to raku clay, explanation of raku firing, demonstrations, ideas for tile, designing single tile, source materials, sculpting in relief, single tile. 2lb clay provided.

Week 2:  Designing a tile frieze to complete by week 5. Glazing of previous weeks’ work. 10 - 20lb clay provided. 

Week 3:  Working on frieze.

Week 4:  Complete project, glazing work if bisque fired, and/or using oxides.

Week 5:  Raku firing of work. Firing fees will be assessed by size of work at 4c /cubic inch.


June 2nd, 2008 Ceramic Studio Worktime

Make what you like in the studio, practise or finish projects started at home, glaze, recycle your clay - 

Wednesdays 3.30 to 6.30pm or later, Saturdays 1 to 4pm. Other times by request.

Mandy &/or Merryn will be on hand for advice. 

Clay available at $30 per 25 # bag, or $1.50 per pound. Firing fees calculated at 4c per cubic inch for raku (cone 07), 5c per cubic inch for stoneware 

(cone 3), including bisque firing and a selection of glazes.  

Regulars / students 4 sessions for 60-, bring a guest 20- per session. 

Group and Individual classes, “ClayDay” Birthday Parties etc. arranged to suit occasion.

July 12th, 2008 Life Drawing and Modelling

Life drawing/modelling sessions.

Monday evenings, 5.30 to 8pm, every other week.

Bring paper, chalks, easel, etc.if drawing. Scratch paper and pencils, table space, and clay tools will be provided for modellers. Clay can be bought from studio. 

Sessions $20- including model. Please prepay for 3 at a time, $60. Mandy’s regular open studio periods can be used to refine modelled pieces etc. without live model ($15). Very informal, semi-outdoor etc. hence the reasonable price. You may need repellant and long pants in the evening.

Current models available include slim white male and female (30’s), slim Hispanic long-haired male (30), small black female (semi-clothed). Session should include starting poses of 1-3 minutes, two 15 minute poses, and one/two longer poses.
